X Games crashes

I think these crashes are from the 2008 X Games. What are your insights into the type of person who is drawn to this kind of competition? What drives them? How do they differ from most folks? How do you think they approach the risks involved (and seen in these clips)?

  1. This stuff is always so tough to watch. It always makes me cringe. I think the main thing that draws people to compete in this kind of competition is the idea of performing such unbelievable stunts like the ones in the video. At least that what drew me to try this kind of stuff. Of course I was awful and it clearly wasn't for me. All the crashing just wasn't my cup of tea. What drives these guys is probably the same thing as what drives everyone else in the world ( like us and art) The love of the activity an the constant desire to do something bigger and better. Even though these videos are so hard to watch I will admit they are addicting.

  2. These people have assessed the risks they are taking and some of them do pay dearly for it. It's true the X-games are really exciting, but I personally, agree with Scott and I really cant handle watching them.

  3. I can't disagree with the two above comments, the crashes are really hard to watch, but at the same time kind of exciting. The X games are all about pushing your body and your mind to it's greatest limits, and the people who participate in them have been practicing for years and know the risks they are putting themselves into. I'm personally an adrenaline junky, so I would have loved to done something like this but my parents quickly put a stop to that.

  4. I think that everyone gets a thrill in a different way. it is really hard to pass judgement. And as Christina said, they asses the risks, and they know the consequences.

  5. Maybe we should have posted a video that showed the successful acts as well as the crashes? After all, the video only shows the downside (though we also see them getting up and walking away, which is damned impressive). On the other hand, as Amy and others said, there's something exciting about seeing crashes (think NASCAR wrecks). Even Plato, back in ancient times, commented on how people would stop along the roadway to look at a body on the side of the road (due to a horse-wreck?). Is looking at people who crash an expression of a secret wish to flirt with death in the same way? Kind of like they say spitting from a rooftop is like an unconscious projection of oneself committing suicide?
