What is the worst American environmental catastrophe?

I really liked the quote at the end of the article by, William Savage Jr., "we're not going to be able to tell until it's over.." I also really liked the comment about "The worst disaster, they say, is always the one that people are living through now.." Its an interesting perspective to think about how a disaster may seem like the all time worst situation, but that's only because you had to live through it. Someone who didn't feel it's impact on a personal level wouldn't consider it quite as disastrous.
