Breast implants for senior citizens?

Click on this link to read a NY Times story (8-8-11) about an 83 year old woman who received a breast implant to improve her looks. Is it "age-ism" to reject this as a bad idea or is a ridiculous waste of money? Note: no one is proposing that there should be any legal obstacles to such procedures, but some are raising ethical questions about the expense and its purpose.

  1. This is a ridiculous article! I find it very interesting that many older people don't agree with piercings or tattoos, which is a body modification, but when they get older, they feel "entitled" to look as good as they feel, which results in modifying the body that god gave them. It's almost shallow, but before I read the article the only thing I could think of was "what about the health risks?", which they are stating isn't as big of an issue as we presumed it to be. They should really think about the possible outcomes of a procedure like this and then ask themselves if it is worth it. Although, if you've done well for yourself and only have another 5-15 years to enjoy it, why not pamper yourself a little bit?

  2. I think that ultimately, it is a seniors deicision, or an adults decision, as it were, to undergo any sort of procedure like this. However, I think that doctors, and the patients should really consider whats at risk if something should go wrong. I think it is very hard, once you pass a certain age, to put so much strain on your body, and you really don't know at that point how much is too much. I think though, it is the job of the surgeon, like in any surgery to talk it over with the patient. Senior citizens get all kinds of surgery.... All the time. This is really no different.

  3. I agree with what the people above have said but honestly when people reach a certain age some don't really care or think about safety. They just want to havve good times and look their best. My grandmother is one of those that loves all the new trendy stuff and likes to look good no matter what. She has heart problems but she still travels a lot. She has been sick many times because of this and still keeps traveling. She also gets botox and has had some surgeries. She looks better than my mom and my aunts. People think she is my aunt not my grandmother. She does think somewhat on the consequences these things have, especially on her with heart problems, but she does them anyways.
