Electric Cars Too Quiet?

This link is to a story in the Sarasota Herald Tribune yesterday about making electric cars noisier.  Apparently there is a concern that they run too quiet and pedestrians will cross the street in front of them.  Should the cars be made noisier (chimes, whirs) or is it the pedestrian's responsibility to look before crossing the street?

  1. this seems a little absurd to me. I believe it should be the pedestrians responsibility to look both ways. I really dont understand how this would become an issue in sarasota anyway, most of the crosswalks here give the pedestrians the right to cross, and they are at lights. Either way no matter where you are though u SHOULD just always look both ways!

  2. This is kind of funny because when I was in L.A. I was crossing in front of an exit of a parking lot and almost got hit by, not an electric car but, a hybrid which is also very quiet. I had no idea it was coming and I am sure I would of been fine even if I was hit because it was going like 10 mph.
However, I do find his a little ridiculous and unnecessary to force electric cars to make more noise so pedestrians can hear them. I think it is the pedestrians responsibility to watch out for themselves. But, I can easily see another McDonlads " hot " coffee lawsuit involving electric cars and being to quiet.
